Bequests
Finding a cure can take more than just one lifetime
A gift in your Will represents an opportunity for you to make a much greater gift to medical research than you may otherwise be able to afford in your lifetime.

Why leave a bequest to medical research at the Garvan?
Discoveries by Garvan scientists have had major impacts on human health and changed world thinking about diseases such as:
Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, asthma, cancer, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, hearing loss, lupus, obesity, osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease, rheumatoid arthritis.

Your bequest can help us fight disease
- By remembering the Garvan with a gift in your Will, you can leave an enduring gift that will help us continue to deepen our understanding of the disease process, bringing closer the prospect of finding new cures.
- In 1998, a major bequest enabled Garvan to set up the arthritis and immunology research program. A major breakthrough of this team has been the development of new treatment for the rheumatoid arthritis, now in stage two clinical trials.
- Whatever the size, every bequest is important to us. And because bequests are directed to our endowment fund, your gift will provide income in perpetuity, enabling us to plan with security as well as fund new research projects with greater ease and speed.

Types of bequests
Bequests can be made in a variety of ways according to your personal situation and preferences. You may choose to bequeath:
- A residual gift which is a share or whole of your estate after providing for family and friends.
- A percentage of the overall value of your estate which allows for growth or depletion of the value of your estate.
- A specified sum of cash. However, this does not allow for changes of circumstance or inflation.
- A gift of real estate, stocks, bonds, shares, artwork, jewelry etc.
It's easy to include a bequest to the Garvan.
You can either include the bequest when you write your Will, or simiply add one as a codicil to your existing Will. In either case, you should seek professional advice from a legal adviser, to ensure your wishes are recorded in a legally binding way.
